This thesis aims to better understand calendrical human sacrifice in the Aztec Empire, ca. 1427–1521 in what is now central Mexico, through a more thorough investigation into Aztec ontology. It is argued that human sacrifice was an act of hope and resilience by the Aztec people in a world that was fragile, and was a ritual that granted life to the natural world and the gods themselves.This thesis begins with a reassessment of the archaeological and primary ethnohistoric data for Aztec sacrifice.
