Power-transferring equipment was designed to change from a-c to d-c power prior to shot time. The d-c power was supplied by storage batteries to motors driving 110-volt 60-cycle single-phase alternators which operated all the instrumentation.An exposure of 10 roentgens of gamma radiation could be tolerated, and the instrumentation shelters were designed by Weapon Effects Test to reduce the expected radiation to meet the 10-r maximum requirement. Ruggedized linear-motion potentiometers manufactured by Colvin Laboratories were selected for the deflection sensors. These potentiometers covered the range of displacements from 1 in. to 24 in. Baldwin SR-4 strain guages of the type AB-7 and ABFX-11 were chosen to measure strains and shear. These guages have a bakelite base and a much higher breakdown potential than the conventional paper-base strain gauges. Special circuitry was designed and fabricated to provide electrical calibration of all the transducers prior to zero time. A sequence timer was designed and built to initiate certain events at times not supplied by Edgerton, Germeshausen & Grier, Inc.This report describes the instrumentation plan for the measurement of deflections and strains on reinforced-concrete structures. This plan required construction of two instrumentation shelters, each to be located inside a nonresponding reinforced-concrete dome. Because one of these was located close to Ground Zero, the radiation problem was important. The equipment available included Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp. oscillograph recorders and carrier amplifiers manufactured by Consolidated and the William Miller Corp. Because these oscillographs used photographic recording media, extensive tests were made on both Micro-File film and Lino-Writ paper to evaluate the amount of radiation which could be tolerated without obliterating the record.Accession No.: 53497.Misc.
