Unlike other classes of smart materials, the technique conveyed allows for a simpler mechanical construction and offers new technological possibilities. Both numerical simulations and experimental procedures have been performed in the present doctorate thesis. The simulations have been implemented in the Matlab® platform. The numerical results reveal that the SMA wires can reduce the lateral vibrations amplitude of the rotating shaft to acceptable levels, as shown by time responses and orbit curves. Experimentally, it has been demonstrated that SMAs, as represented by metallic wires, can be effective in lateral vibration reduction. It has also been verified that the temperature of the SMA wire can be employed to tune the vibration control system. This way, a passive control system is proposed taking advantage of intrinsic characteristic SMA wires.CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorTese (Doutorado)Este trabalho trata da investigação do controle passivo de vibrações mecânicas em máquinas rotativas utilizando fios de memória de forma (SMA – Shape Memory Alloys). Diferentemente de outras classes de materiais inteligentes, esta técnica permite uma construção mecânica mais simples e oferece novas oportunidades tecnológicas. Investigações numéricas e experimentais foram realizadas neste trabalho. As simulações foram feitas em ambiente Matlab® e os resultados numéricos obtidos mostram que o uso de fios de memória de forma pode reduzira amplitude das vibrações mecânicas, conforme verificado nas respostas temporais e nas órbitas obtidas. Foi demonstrado experimentalmente a efetividade das ligas de memória de forma, utilizadas na forma de fios metálicos, para a redução das vibrações laterais da máquina rotativa em análise. Verificou-se também que a temperatura do fio de SMA pode ser empregada para sintonizar o sistema de controle de vibrações. Assim, o funcionamento do sistema é do tipo passivo, aproveitando as características de memória de forma dos fios utilizados
