Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease characterized by highly inflammatory, sometimes disfiguring lesions that nonetheless spontaneously resolve, resulting in robust protection against reinfection. It has been known for decades that a type 1 CD4+ T cell response is critical for both primary parasite control and subsequent protection against reinfection.
