Visages invisibles : retour à Cyrène

International audienceThe case of the funerary figures from Cyrene is a good one to explore the problem of non-visibility. From this dossier three kinds of reflexions arise, corresponding to the three parts of this article. First, the history of Cyrene’s rediscovery (an ancient city in Libya) reveals how difficult it was for the discoverers to see these atypical works, statues without a face found in the necropolis. The aprosopia, which characterises part of these statues, has been overlooked, even negated, before it was finally acknowledged. Second, the originality of this figurative form has been reduced to a kind of aniconism. This misleading term, now limited to specific cases of non-figuration, inscribed the “aprosopon” figures in an evolutionist conception of religious figuration, nowadays outdated. Another way of not seeing what was the originality of these statues : a solution to the problem of the figuration of death as non-visibility. Lastly, the numerous examples with a face invite us to reflect about the other signs which could take on the notion of non-visibility, in particular in sculptural representation of funerary figures.Le cas des figures funéraires de Cyrène offre matière à une exploration du problème de la non-visiblité. Le dossier suscite trois types de réflexions, correspondant aux trois étapes de cet article. Tout d’abord l’histoire de la redécouverte de la cité antique de Cyrène révèle la difficulté qu’ont eue les découvreurs à voir ces œuvres atypiques que sont les statues sans visage de la nécropole. L’aprosopie, caractéristique d’une partie des exemplaires, a été inaperçue, voire niée, avant d’être tardivement reconnue. Ensuite l’originalité de cette forme de figuration a été ramenée à la notion d’aniconisme. Ce terme équivoque, désormais limité à des cas précis de non-figuration, inscrivait les figures « aprosopon » dans une vision évolutionniste, aujourd’hui caduque, de la figuration religieuse. Autre façon de ne pas reconnaître leur originalité : une solution au problème de la figuration de la non-visibilité de la mort. Enfin les nombreux spécimens qui sont dotés d’un visage invitent à s’interroger sur les autres signes pouvant prendre en charge la notion de non-visibilité, en particulier dans la représentation plastique de la figure funéraire
