A morphological and sustainable approach to open space design. The case study of Viterbo historical centre

The project proposal is based on the idea that a city is, rst of all, a body made out of “fabrics”. Social, economic and cultural fabrics that in the physical form of the built city are the direct and dynamic expression of its vitality over me. The Morphological analysis of Viterbo urban fabric has therefore cons tuted the rst step of the project while the second step has been to focus on daily use of urban spaces, in order to make the center of Viterbo an accessible, pedestrian and child-friendly neighbourhood. But to talk about a shared, e cient, ci zen-friendly city, means, at the end of the day, to tell of a sustainable city where Morphology and Sustainability can be part of a unique crea ve process. That has been our main goal from a methodological point of view. The city is in fact a key resource for the environmental control. The scale of microclimate come into play ghter interac ons between design and climate data, improving context environmental condi ons, promo ng social rela ons between users and enabling energy-saving-strategies for the crea on of a healthy and comfortable urban environment. The joint use of Urban Morphology together with an accurate environmental analysis by GIS Environmental maps and a parametric costs control of design choices for the Economic and Financial sustainability has made possible the design of living spaces, aware and respec ul from the iden ty point of view, e cient from the energe c point of view, but also open and exible to the changing use condi ons of city-life
