International audienceThe chapter focuses on urban forms and images through colonial archives and Tamil or Telugu manuscripts dealing with the South Indian pre-colonial Kingdoms history. In foundation myths, the city appears as a sacred place where gods are living and where human beings can be secure. In Vijayanagar and its successor States, the main Capital was dominated by the double figures of King and Goddess. It appears as a political space, seen as the microcosm of a kingdom marked out by fort towns built by local dependent chiefs. At the beginning of the 19th century, image diversity and form diversity often corresponded.
