Die Erscheinungsformen der Ostjüdischen Kultur in Berlin 1919-1925

This paper presents a detailed portrait of the sudden flowering and subsequent decline of the Eastern European Jewish cultural scene in Berlin in the years following the First World War. Particular attention is focused on the period between 1922 and 1924, during which almost all manifestations of Yiddish culture thrived in the German capital. The paper is introduced with a brief description of the large Eastern European Jewish migration to and through Berlin in the early twenties. The demographic information summarized in this section supplies a background for the cultural analysis.
