The new critical edition of Vergil’s Aeneid by Conte enjoys a prominent, new and at the same time different position if compared with Mynors and Geymonat’s editions: its focus is on the processes related to the constitution of the text and it does not fail to provide a useful critical apparatus, selective but full and rich in details about editorial choices. Through a wide search for manuscript evidence, which includes some early medieval manuscripts not yet used in the critical editions so far published, and thanks to Conte’s mastery of Virgilian philological and exegetical problems, the constitution of the text provided by Conte is the result of both careful approach and convincing solutions.
