It is argued in this paper that the potential for a "distributed cartography' where the user has the ability to produce maps using a micro-computer has been considerably advanced by three specific technological advances: the development of a new, much more powerful generation of microcomputers; the development of new storage devices such as compact optical discs; and the development of cheap laser printers.
