Three Essays on the Link Between Geographical Location and Economic Behavior

Capire come le caratteristiche socio-economiche dell’area in cui gli individui vivono interagiscano con i loro comportamenti è una questione importante sia da un punto di vista accademico che di policy. Questa tesi si occupa di valutare il ruolo della dimensione geografica in tre diverse scelte economiche. Tutte e tre le domande di ricerca sono affrontate empiricamente utilizzando differenti metodi econometrici. Il capitolo 2 di questa tesi studia come le caratteristiche industriali dell’area dove gli imprenditori sono collocati, e, in particolare, il livello di agglomerazione industriale, influenzino la reazione degli stessi ad una crisi economica aggregata. Il capitolo 3 si occupa di analizzare come la composizione industriale ad inizio del ventesimo secolo e il livello di sviluppo economico nello stesso periodo, assieme ad altre caratteristiche storiche, influenzino il comportamento di voto dei cittadini in epoca contemporanea. Il capitolo 4 studia infine l’effetto del costo economico sulla probabilità di iscriversi all’università, con una particolare attenzione al ruolo della distanza geografica all’interno della misura di costo. In tutti questi contesti, i risultati mostrano che le caratteristiche dell’area hanno un’influenza persistente sulle scelte individuali, suggerendo che la dimensione geografica debba essere tenuta in considerazione in decisioni di policy.Understanding how socio-economic characteristics of the area individuals live interplay with their behavior is an important issue both from an academic and a policy perspective. This PhD thesis is aimed at studying the role of location in three different economic choices. All the research questions will be addressed using empirical microeconomic methods. Chapter 2 studies how industrial characteristics of the area where entrepreneurs are located, and in particular the degree of industrial agglomeration, affect their resilience to economic shocks. Chapter 3 illustrates how early industrial and historical characteristics of the location affect the present voting behavior of people. Lastly, Chapter 4 investigates the effects of the cost of studying on the university choice, with a particular focus on the home to university distance. In all of these frameworks, results show that the characteristics of the geographical location matter and exhibit a strong over time persistence, suggesting that this is a dimension to be taken into account in the policy design process
