Peptidergic neurons of the lateral hypothalamus containing orexin (OX) or melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) are implicated in several physiological functions, including energy homeostasis and sleep regulation. In particular, OX neurons play a role in wakefulness consolidation and MCH neurons are sleep-active.
