The single nucleotide bulge is a nucleic acid secondary structural motif of important biological relevance. Bulges in DNA function as intermediates in the process of frameshift mutation. Bulges in RNA participate in protein-RNA interactions, RNA tertiary interactions, and ribozyme functioning.
