High temperature desulfurization of highly reducing coal-derived gases using cerium oxide sorbents is the primary object of this dissertation research. Such a process may be used with the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) if H2S concentration may be controlled under 20 ppmv or with the Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) if H2S concentration is less than 1 ppmv. The primary advantage of cerium oxide over the first generation zinc-based high temperature desulfurization sorbents which have been investigated for decades, is the potential to produce elemental sulfur directly during the regeneration phase of the process.
