In her oral history, Sr. Madonna Bishop discusses her life as a Sister of Saint Francis, having a unique background as both a school teacher and a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Initially reluctant to enter the religious life, Sr. Bishop became open to becoming a sister after her encounter with the sisters of Saint Mary’s Academy, Indianapolis, whom she described as having a “sincere goodness.” Awarded degrees in English and Reading, Sr. Bishop taught numerous subjects at the grade school and high school levels before returning to school at the age sixty-four to become an LPN, completing an internship at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.
