Does Associate Degree Nursing (Adn) Student Math Competency Improve with a Math for Nurses Session?

Dosage calculation examinations were administered to nursing students entering the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in the northeastern area of the United Stat (U.S.). Historically, nursing students have verbalized anxiety about the dosage calculation examinations given every semester. Dosage calculation exams were successfully completed when the nursing student achieved a score of 90 % or greater by the third attempt. Scores on the dosage calculation exams have been found to range from 30% to 95% correct on the first attempt. Does Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Student Math Competency Improve with a Math for Nurses Session? The purpose of the project was to develop a Math for Nurses Session to assist the nursing student in successful completion of a dosage calculation examination. Through practice and review of math and dosage calculation concepts, the nursing student will understand the math and dosage calculation concepts and obtain a score of 90% or greater on their first attempt of taking the post-test examination and on dosage calculation examinations each semester. A total of 81 students in the two entering level groups completed the intervention. A pre-test/post-test format was utilized for the study. Data analysis revealed a statistical difference in the post-test scores for 50 foundation of nursing students (t= -13.452; p\u3c.000) and 31 LPN to RN transition nursing students (t= -8.707; p \u3c .000). Students expressed the need for a Math for Nurses session prior to the dosage calculation examination
