In 1959, the physicist Richard Feynman wondered if the text of the Encyclopedia Britannica could be contained on the head of a pin. Today we are looking at the amazing potential of materials that are 10,000-1 million times smaller than the head of a pin. These nano and sub-micron scale “dots” have unique properties that make them candidates for applications in a wide range of fields, including medicine and defense. Susquehanna University students have been involved in research involving nanoparticles made of gold and silver, to name a few, and have also developed instrumentation to make “tiny dots” out of proteins that could potentially be used to repair damaged tissue
