The Effect of Poetry Instruction on Reading Fluency and Comprehension

This study researched the effects of poetry instruction on reading fluency and comprehension. The goal of this study was to determine if poetry instruction impacted the reading fluency and comprehension of first grade students. Other questions that were to be answered through this study include if students would understand fluent reading, if fluent reading would impact comprehension, and if students would find enjoyment in poetry instruction and practice. Students received direct instruction of one poem per week through lessons that focused on comprehension and fluency. Then students were given the opportunity to practice their poems during independent reading time and during partner reading. At the end of the week, students had the option of performing the poem for the class. Results showed gains in reading fluency for first grade students, and positive changes for many students in reading comprehension. Due to positive results, poetry instruction will be continued for first grade students, and results will be shared with other educators
