Maritime energy efficiency in the Caribbean appears to be predicated on two key requirements; regulatory controls over the vessels operating in the region and the availability and use of efficient technology. While many Caribbean territories have ratified MARPOL AnnexVI, implementation of the standards therein, presents challenges that are familiar to maritime administrators of the region. These challenges include insufficient resources and inadequate implementation of relevant standards. These issues have traditionally plagued the region.
