Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired syndrome characterized by intravascular activation of coagulation. There is a wide variety of etiologies that can lead to DIC, with sepsis at the forefront. DIC presents in just under 20% of ICU admissions, with mortality rates up to 78%.
