In 2005 the Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Department of Conservation reported a total of 2.1 million visitors to Maine state parks and historic sites. The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine in conjunction with the Maine Department of Conservation conducted a study to determine the total contribution to Maine’s economy that results from the spending related to visitors to Maine state parks and historic sites. In addition the study sought to determine the characteristics, behaviors and perceptions of those visitors
