The COLUMBUS program continues and extends European capabilities in manned space flight which have been initiated with the Spacelab program. Based on European experience in supporting Spacelab missions and the valuable contribution of industrial personnel for this support, the need for a continuing operations support by the companies involved in the design and development of the Free Flying Laboratory and the Attached Laboratory has been established.
