The strategic importance of nuclear power lies in its contribution to: expanding electricity supplies essential to economic growth; assuring the nation\u27s orderly transition from insecure foreign oil to abundant domestic resources; and eventually providing an essentially inexhaustible source of energy. The historical partnership between the Federal Government and industry in developing nuclear technology, including the reasons for decline in the last five years, is described. Recent changes in Federal policies and programs designed to enable increased use of nuclear power are reviewed. But the outlook will remain uncertain for the near term until public confidence is restored
