Microgravity scientific research is performed in space is to determine the effects of gravity upon experiments. Until recently, experiments had to accept the environment aboard the various carriers: reduced gravity aircraft, sub-orbital payloads, SpaceShuttle, and Mir. If the environment is unacceptable, then most scientists would rather not expend the resources without the assurance of true microgravity conditions.
