This paper concentrates specifically on women\u27s search for utopia, beginning with examples of their lives and roles in only a few of the dozens of alternative communities that sprang up in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the United States. As these died out, women\u27s search for utopia shifted from the forming of isolated communities to social reform. Today, that search is taking a new direction, especially in the women\u27s movement and in feminist utopian fiction
