Multimodal Assignments

Our students consume massive amounts of information online and also compose digitally on various social media and online networking platforms daily. In order to embrace this 21st century learning environment, I argue that instructors should consider critically integrating small multimodal assignments into their classrooms. I contend that multimodal assignments can extend students’ literacies. That extension can help students evaluate online information and learn multiple ways to communicate, rather than relying only on the traditional written essay. This presentation will briefly explore various constraints and affordances associated with these types of assignments, provide suggestions for integrating and assessing multimodal texts, and conclude by offering attendees examples of my assignments sheets, student work, and a list of references for further reading
