Topochemical reactions, such as ion exchange, can be important in various solid state transformations. The low temperatures used in these methods ensure a limited amount of bond breaking and rearrangement in the starting materials and can lead to low temperature metastable products. In this study, the doubled layered perovskites, RbBiNb2O7 and RbSmTa2O7, were synthesized using a conventional ceramic method. Alkali metal ion exchange reactions were then carried out with ANO3 (A = Li, Na, and K) to produce a new series of substituted layered perovskites. Details on the characterization of these new compounds will be presented and potential applications of this series discussed
