The specificity of metaphoric comprehension in children with autism

As pesquisas envolvendo a compreensão de aspectos figurados por autistas são unânimes em afirmar que esses indivíduos não compreendem metáforas. O objetivo desse artigo é discutir a hipótese de que a dificuldade dos autistas não reside exatamente na compreensão de sentidos figurados, mas na sua incapacidade de incluir o contexto e/ou a intenção do outro na interpretação de um enunciado com sentido figurado. A fim de desenvolver essa hipótese, parte-se, inicialmente, da delimitação do conceito de metáfora e, em especial, da apresentação de um tipo de metáfora – as primárias – que, em princípio, não requer pistas contextuais para sua compreensão. A seguir, passa-se à delimitação do conceito de Transtorno Global do Desenvolvimento, já que o autismo pertence a essa categoria nosológica. Por fim, são revisados estudos que fornecem evidências quanto à compreensão de alguns aspectos figurados por indivíduos autistas para apontar novas hipóteses para as falhas na compreensão de metáforas por esses sujeitos.The research involving figurative language comprehension by those with autism has unanimously affirmed that these individuals do not comprehend metaphor. The objective of this article is to explore the hypothesis that this difficulty does not reside exactly in the comprehension of figurative aspects of language, but in the incapability of the subjects to take the context and/or the speaker’s intention into account upon the interpretation of an utterance with figurative meaning. In order to develop this hypothesis, we part from the delineation of the concept of metaphor, particularly primary metaphors, which, by definition, do not rely on contextual clues for understanding. We then delimit the concept of Pervasive Development Disorder, since autism belongs to this category nosologic. Finally, we review studies which provide evidence regarding the comprehension of figurative aspects of language by autistic individuals in order to indicate new hypotheses with respect to these particular problems with metaphor comprehension
