Os sinais aposemáticos de um indivíduo, assim como a postura corporal, podem ser importantes para sua defesa contra predadores. As espécies do gênero Melanophryniscus caracterizam-se por possuir alcaloides lipofílicos tóxicos na pele e apresentar coloração ventral avermelhada, a qual pode ser exibida a partir da postura defensiva chamada de reflexo “unken”. Ambos comportamento e padrão de coloração são descritos como mecanismos de defesa, contudo, ainda não existem estudos testando a sua eficácia.
