A flexible low resolution spectrometer is being built for a program of experiments to be done at the LAMPF Nucleon Physics Lab. The bend angle of charged particles through an 18D36 magnet will be determined by multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) with 2-mm wire spacing. The general design of the chambers and of the associated electronics for readout and encoding are discussed. Some results obtained with a prototype system are given. (auth
