Introduction: Anticipated uranium requirements of nuclear power plants have prompted many organizations to examine the possibility of recovering uranium from low-grade sources such as shale, phosphate, sea water, and coal. Coal has generated special interest because some uranium was recovered from uranium-bearing carbonaceous rock in the mid-1960s. About 5,000 samples of coal have been analyzed for uranium by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration, and numerous state and private agencies
