The focal mechanisms of intraplate earthquakes within subducting lithosphere are frequently used to infer large-scale stress regimes induced by slab-pull, bending or unbending, and lateral segmentation and undulations of the slab. Numerous studies have further postulated that the intraplate activity is influenced by transitory regional stress regimes such as those associated with interplate thrust events. Temporal variations of the latter type may potentially play an important role in assessing regions of uncertain seismic potential, and possibly even in earthquake forecasting.
