With the exception of certain early work with flat crystals by Rutherford & Andrade (1) and by Frilley (2), to date, crystal diffraction γ-ray spectroscopy has been accomplished almost entirely by means of transmission-type spectrometers using bent quartz crystal focusing. In this type of instrument, whose first conception was published in 1930 by DuMond & Kirkpatrlck (3), a thin cylindrical lamina of quartz of uniform thickness is bent so that its neutral plane, initially a right circular cylinder of radius 2R, assumes the form of a right circular cylinder of radius R.
