There are many theories of causation, and each has its virtues. If it is to be understood why knowledge of causal relationships is so useful, we are best served by a probabilistic theory of causation. Drawing on similarities between probabilistic theories of causation and of rational decision, the author explains how beliefs about causal relationships guide our deliberations, and addresses an outstanding issue in the theory of causation
