This dissertation is concerned with the dynamic response of a finite flexible bar partially embedded in a half-space, under transverse loadings. The loadings are applied at the unembedded end of the bar and may, in general, be a combination of time-harmonic shear and moment. The problem is intended to serve as a fundamental idealization for the dynamic analysis of piles or other embedded foundations whose flexibilities are not negligible. By treating the bar as a one-dimensional structure and the half-space as a three-dimensional elastic continuum, the interaction problem is formulated as a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind.
