A histologic study of the effect of pressure on the median palatine suture in the cat

Pressure was applied to the median palatine suture of the experimental cats via a fixed appliance which consisted of an O.I.S. fan-type expansion screw, which rested above the palatal mucosa, and four soldered arms, two per side, which extended from the expansion screw laterally along the palatal mucosa through the embrasure distal to the canine and onto the buccal surface of the maxilla. By drilling four holes in the buccal surface of the maxilla for the four arms of the appliance, stabilization was achieved.
