Healing of an induced wound in the marrow of the iliac crest of dogs: a histologic investigation

Six adult, clinically healthy, mongrel dogs were used. A wound was created with a Westerman-Jensen bone marrow biopsy needle in the ilium of the animal. The period of the study was from one week to four months. Relative values of various marrow components were assessed on an arbitrary basis. The results showed a dramatic rise in all the marrow elements within the wound area. The white blood cells remained at a consistently high level for the first month of the study. These then declined but were still higher than normal at the end of the period evaluated. The osteoblasts were at a much higher level than normal for the first two weeks of the study, and then declined slightly. They too remained elevated at the end of four months. The osteoclasts were also greatly increased at one week, however, their numbers dropped dramatically at two weeks, and were normal by one month. They stayed at this level for the duration of the study
