La influencia de la estética oriental en la autotraducción: análisis de la novela bicultural The Good Earth de la autora P.S. Buck

This dissertation analyses the Eastern cultural influences present in the aesthetic of P.S. Buck’s best seller The Good Earth, as the main element responsible for the novel’s success. This novel was awarded several prizes such as the Pulitzer Prize and, ultimately, led the author to obtain the Nobel Prize in Literature. Furthermore, this novel had relevant social and political repercussions in the United States at the time (Liao, 1997). Thus, the objective is to study the characteristics of Buck’s aesthetic as a product of a creative process of self-translation (Evangelista, 2013) between the Mandarin language, the author’s first language, and English, her second language. Moreover, the description of her Chinese characters has also been studied taking into account the main philosophical movements and politeness aspects present in China at the time. The methodology of analysis has focused on the characters of the novel, the strategies used to refer to them (names, nicknames, lexical references or kinship), the characters’ idiolect and their social interaction, i.e. facework as presented in some dialogues of the novel. Finally, these cultural aspects have been compared with one of the Spanish translations available of the novel. To carry out this study, the main Western and Eastern literature movements at the beginning of the twentieth century together with Chinese traditional literature have also been revised in this work. The results obtained show a novel highly influenced by the Eastern tradition, especially from Taoism, where the idiolect of the characters show an influence from both East and West possible thanks to the mechanism of self-translation, and where the author shows a thorough knowledge of the politeness rules applicable to several of the dialogues.Ante una novela de gran reconocimiento nacional e internacional (Premio Pulitzer y Nobel de Literatura, entre otros), escrita por una autora estadounidense acerca de la vida cotidiana de una familia campesina de la China de principios del siglo XX, cabe preguntarse por las influencias culturales presentes en la novela a distintos niveles. Este trabajo analiza estas influencias culturales en la estética de P.S. Buck en su bestseller The Good Earth que, además, tuvo repercusiones sociales y políticas decisivas gracias a su gran contribución a la mejoría de la imagen de los ciudadanos chinos residentes en EEUU (Liao, 1997). La estética se ha estudiado en este caso partiendo de que la obra se ha desarrollado como fruto del fenómeno de la autotraducción (Evangelista, 2013) que la autora hace del mandarín, su primera lengua, al inglés, su segunda lengua. Asimismo, se ha observado la caracterización de los personajes teniendo en cuenta los principales movimientos filosóficos y las normas de cortesía vigentes en esa época en China. La metodología del análisis se ha centrado, pues, en los personajes de la novela, las estrategias que se han empleado para referirse a ellos (nombres propios, apodos, referentes léxicos y parentesco), el idiolecto de los personajes y su interacción, por ejemplo, en diálogos que muestran el funcionamiento del concepto de cara en esta sociedad. Finalmente, se han contrastado estos elementos culturales con una de las traducciones de la obra al español para comprobar en qué medida se han trasladado las características orientales a esta traducción. Para poder llevar a cabo este estudio, se han estudiado los movimientos literarios orientales y occidentales de principios del siglo XX, así como la literatura tradicional china. El resultado obtenido muestra una novela influida en gran medida por la tradición oriental, especialmente por la taoísta, donde el idiolecto de los personajes pone de manifiesto una influencia tanto de occidente como de oriente y posibilitada gracias al mecanismo de autotraducción y donde la autora muestra un profundo conocimiento de las normas de cortesía aplicadas en los diálogos
