The Catholic University of AmericaFrom the early 1980s when the first cases of HIV/AIDS were diagnosed, until the 1990s when the antiretroviral therapies became available, a person who contracted HIV/AIDS faced the prospect of an almost certain and painful debilitating death. With the development of the antiretroviral therapies, many persons once destined to die from AIDS had the possibility of surviving AIDS. These persons find themselves adjusting to the prospect of living with a life-limiting chronic illness.
