The theory and practice of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions has been driven by the academics, aid agencies, NGOs, and international governmental organizations such as the UN, who have normalized the rhetoric and practice of truth-telling as a method of post-war peacebuilding. This dissertation shows that the underlying normative concepts of this approach rely on inappropriately universalized concepts of healing and justice, which are, in reality, not shared, nor experienced, universally. Through the voices of local people, I show how truth-telling was experienced in post-war Makeni, Sierra Leone.
