The focus of this dissertation spans the fields of international trade theory and political economy. Its objective is to identify the role of scale economies, country size, asset inequality and ideology on the determination of equilibrium trade policies. The strategy is to preserve the tractability of general equilibrium modeling but augment it by incorporating economies of scale in production. This adjustment is essential due to significant empirical evidence of scale economies.
