College students who engage in episodic, heavy drinking (i.e., binge drinking) are at significantly greater risk for negative consequences than those who do not drink in this way. Encouraging but limited research indicates that brief motivational interventions maybe an effective way to reduce binge drinking in college students. This study aims were to (a) replicate previous research by evaluating the efficacy of brief motivational interventions with binge drinking students, (b) extend previous work by comparing a brief motivational intervention to an active control group (i.e., an individually administered alcohol education session), and (c) extend previous research by recruiting from a referred sample.
