Previous research has suggested that acute consumption of alcohol may influence subsequent sexual choices. However, this correlational evidence is equivocal. As behavioral prevention of unprotected intercourse remains the primary strategy to curb HIV transmission, understanding the potential role of alcohol as a situational barrier to safer sexual behavior is important to guide effective prevention messages.
