Animals that defend a focal point generally decrease their aggressive frequency to intruders at increasing distances from the nest. Aggressive frequency is comprised of two sequential behaviors, the use of space and aggressive tendency. The resident has to first approach the intruder (space use) before it can attack (aggressive tendency). This study examined how manipulations of the net benefit of a contest influenced a nesting male dwarf gourami\u27s (Colisa lalia) spatial and aggressive response to an intruder.
