Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for its role in different physiological and structural functions in livestock animals; however, excess feeding of P to dairy cows leads to increased P excretion in feces. Accurate formulation of dairy diets is necessary for two main reasons: 1) phosphorus is the most expensive macro element supplemented in the dairy diet, and 2) it represents the greatest pollution risk if excess is released into the environment.
