Bloat is an abnormal accumulation of gases in the paunch or rumen, resulting in great distention of the organ with subsequent paralysis of its walls. Bloat has been known for more than a century. Trotter of Scotland in 1811 writing on the general view of agriculture speak of “the swelling of cattle by eating too great a quantity of clover, potatoes, turnips, or cabbages.” In recent years since legume pastures have become more widely used for dairy cattle, dairymen have become concerned about bloat.
