South Dakota has been selected to participate in one of two government-subsidized pasture, rangeland, and forage risk management pilot insurance programs. These programs were developed by the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) to provide livestock produc¬ers the ability to purchase insurance protection for losses of forage produced for grazing or harvested for hay. One pilot program is based on a rainfall index and is being piloted in 16 states other than South Dakota. The second pilot insurance program is based on a veg¬etation index.
