Waterfowl prefer wetlands with about a 50:50 ratio of emergent vegetation to open water. Growth of dense monotypic stands of cattail has contributed to loss of wetland habitat and to the declining trends of some waterfowl populations. Rodeo herbicide (glyphosate) may be an effective chemical tool for altering emergent vegetative cover, but little is known about it effects on nontarget organisms such as aquatic invertebrates that are important as a food source for waterfowl.
