In 1988, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) was first listed on the International Union of Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as Threatened. By 1994 the California condor thad been relisted as critically endangered. The Peregrine Fund (at the World Center for Birds of prey), the Los Angeles Zoo, the Oregon Zoo, and the San diego Wild Animal Park has been managing a large-scale integrated captive-breeding and reintroduction program that has been largely responsible for the current upward population trend of the California condor.
