This study describes common strategies used by nurses to manage pain during needle procedures in pediatric oncology patients. By reviewing a handful of studies it was determined that nurses most commonly use a combination of EMLA cream and distraction during needle procedures. However, pediatric oncology patients continue to report needle procedures as being the most painful problem regarding their care and treatment. The purpose of this research proposal is to discover what specific pain control practices are most effective in relieving pain during common needle procedures in pediatric oncology patients.
